Waterford Museum of Treasures, Ireland
Waterford Museum of Treasures features three stunning museums that cover more than 1000 years of history in Ireland's oldest city; Reginald's Tower, The Bishop's Palace and the Medieval Museum. JANVS | VIDAR were the interpretative designers for all three projects which completed the €30m development of a new museum quarter.
Orkuverið Jörð, Iceland
The Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland is an area of high geothermal activity, with volcanoes, boiling mud pools and geysers. Orkuverið Jörð (translation: Powerplant Earth) is a hands-on interactive exhibition that looks at energy from the 'Big Bang' to the present day and tells the story of how humankind has harnessed and used natural energy.
Wymondham Abbey, Norfolk, UK
Wymondham Abbey is a Grade I listed building and has been in continuous service as the parish church of Wymondham for over 900 years. It is one of only three churches in England to have been founded not only as a Priory but also a parish church. This dual purpose - not always a happy arrangement for the monks and parishioners - makes the church’s early history unusual and colourful. The Abbey welcomes about 20,000 heritage visitors per year.
The archives and collections date back to the thirteenth century and include several rare and important items including a recently re-discovered 1613 edition of the King James Bible. Adjacent to the Abbey is a meadow containing most of the ruins of the Priory, now almost all below ground. This is an important area of green space in the town, with obvious historical interest. At the moment it is completely closed to the public, and the project scope includes opening this area to the public and thus bring it into visitors’ experience for the first time.
National Trust Discovery Centre, Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire, UK
Many buildings in the care of the National Trust are no longer fit for their original purpose and are a potential resource for development to alternative uses. The Brewhouse is part of a group of semi-derelict Grade II listed buildings in the stable yard of the Clumber Park Estate in Nottinghamshire, once the private estate of the Dukes of Newcastle.
Working closely with the National Trust regional team, JANVS | VIDAR redeveloped this building as a hands-on discovery and education centre.
The centre provides an exciting and stimulating environment for learning activities and offers an excellent resource for curriculum based work, particularly for Key Stages 1 and 2. It is a great, all year round venue for learning visits.
Preston Park Museum, Stockton-on-Tees, UK
The Tees Valley First World War Commemoration Partnership comprises of five boroughs – Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton. An award of almost £400k from Arts Council England’s Renaissance Strategic Support Fund allowed the development of the Tees Valley First World War Project. JANVS | VIDAR was contracted to design and manufacture the touring exhibition.
Hafnarfjörður Museum, Iceland
The Museum of Hafnarfjörður is a town museum in southwest Iceland, situated on the tourist route between the airport at Keflavík and the capital city, Reykjavík. Cultural artefacts and photographs of the town of Hafnarfjörður are collected and displayed across several buildings. Between 2004 and 2019, the interpretative design team at JANVS | VIDAR has been working with the museum staff to gradually develop each gallery space. Themes cover the complete period of the town's history; recently completed display themes include a children's museum, the British Occupation of WW2, maritime history, the Hanseatic League, and Icelandic sports.
