Alterface unveils Smurfs darkride and Lucky Luke theatre at Comics Station Antwerp
Belgian media company Alterface has installed two interactive attractions at Comics Station Antwerp.
Comics Station, which opened at Easter, is an indoor theme park located in Antwerp Central Station. It hosts 60 attractions over four levels and 6000 sq m (64583 sq f).
The park is themed around six beloved Belgian comic book characters including The Smurfs, Lucky Luke, Suske & Wiske (Spike & Suzy), Jommeke, Kiekeboe and Urbanus.
The attractions are designed to bring the classic comic book stories to life, and include dark rides, a drop tower, a walk-through, bumper cars, soft play and the world’s tallest indoor slide.
Alterface were commissioned to create The Smurfs dark ride and the Lucky Luke theatre at the park.
Benoit Cornet, founder and CEO of Alterface, says: “For the Smurf ride we dug into our 3D Vision background and developed a system that tracks the movement of passive wands in front of a screen. No electronics, just a magic wand to help the Smurfs accomplish their mission.”
Cornet adds: “This patented technology brings a totally new dynamic to the way people interact with screens. It creates an interesting balance between the not so natural pure hand-gesture detection and the sophisticated circuitry brought by the interactive devices.”
For the Lucky Luke theatre Alterface used its Salto show control technology to create a media based show. It features a wagon-styled room with a number of audience-facing screens concealed by sliding doors. The sliding doors open to reveal the story playing out on the screens underneath, they are designed to give the illusion that the story is literally running around the room, and add a physical element to the media based attraction.
